tamas: (tamasic). Mental state of inertia and ignorance; mental counterpart of kapha. Tamas refers to that style of functioning of consciousness (chitta) which embraces notions of darkness, inertia, insensitivity, Ignorance and so on. Tamas is one of the “three gunas“. The others are sattva and rajas.
